First Fixes

Spent an hour or so with Christopher noting down the VIN and various serial numbers on the engine, chassis, gearbox, transfer box, axles, etc... Managed to find all of them except the rear axle serial number and the chassis serial number. Suspect to read the chassis serial number will have to remove the front guard and possibly the bumper. Will do that another day this week.

VIN - SALLDHM67VAxxxxxx

Decoded as below:

SAL - Europe, United Kingdom, Land Rover
LD - Defender 90, 110, 130, Defender
H - Defender 110"
M - Defender 5 door Station Wagon
6 - 2.5L, inline 4 cylinder, turbo-diesel (200Tdi/300Tdi) EGR/cat
7 - R380 5 Speed Manual / Right Hand Drive
V - 1997
A - Solihull, United Kingdom

Good news so far is that the VIN and engine numbers match the original owners manual documentation stickers in the handbook from initial purchase in 1997.

Autoglass came round to repair the stone chip on the front windscreen. The crack has been stabilised and there is now a smooth finish on both sides. There still remains what looks like a bug splat though. Will live with it for now as it is not going to cause a problem. At some point when doing more significant work on the car will consider replacing the screen.

Took a look at the failing RH side indicator repeater. Reseating the lamp has addressed the problem. However, there is a missing seal (as can be seen on the LH side indicator repeater below) between the casing and the bodywork. Will order two seals as the one below looks a little perished.

When looking at the cables to the RH side indicator repeater, noticed on the inside of the wing there is a glued on shiny metal plate.

There is no such plate on the inside on the LH wing. Wondering if it was for some shielding of electronics in the original fit.

Turns out the failing rear tail light was due to one of the connector wires having become detached from the plug - simple fix to push it back on again - connection seemed firm enough. Will put some thought into whether it would be worth adding more physical support to the wires around the plug.

Removed the front side light to determine why it was not working. Not lamp present and the lens is broken. Will order a replacement.

Had a look at the EGR unit. Looks like there may be a blanking plate already fitted under the EGR valve. Job for another day will be to remove the air intake feed and see if it was cleaned up when the EGR was blanked off.

Inspected the middle console unit on the dash board.

No clue yet as to what the middle cut out was used for. There is a dangling white two connector socket.

The power socket on the right looks as though it may have a cracked light/thermal tube. However, subsequent searching of images on the internet suggests that all is good and the housing is the correct shape.

Investigated more of the cabling in the battery box. So many wires that need to be traced and so many questions. Think my plan of attack will be to work backwards from the various power/communications sockets, remove them and the wires back to source.

Determined that the alarm appears to be working in that it went off when set via the key fob and opened the drivers door. Will do more exhaustive test.

Determined that the hole in the body work at floor level between LH front seat and second row seat is actually an added power socket. However, this is not connected and will be removed.

Removed the split battery charger and what appears to be a previously connected battery cut off switch.

Have ordered a spare remote key fob and programmer from Remote Key Lock. Hopefully once delivered we will be able to program up and have a spare remote key fob. The company also claim they will be able to send on the EKA number which will be useful if the key fobs ever fail and the immboliser has to be overridden.

Keen to get a spare set of ignition keys. Have gone onto the Radio Codes web site to determine and order the key code which was provided pretty quickly over email. Note that the key code did not initially show on their website but got the email with the key code within 35 minutes. Have ordered a couple of original Land Rover keys cut to this key code from MB Lock Tec which should hopefully arrive by post soon.

Have booked the car for a full service at DBL Land Rovers in Nailsea including a cam belt change.
