Initial work on electrics

Removed an extraneous main power lead from the battery box to the front bumper. This was bracketed across the inside front left wheel arch and all the bolts have been removed. Will consider how to block the bolt holes in the wheel arch to ensure road dirt does not get through them into the engine bay.

Removed the power socket array which was bolted to the RH load area. Had to remove the rear bench seats for access. Have now removed both rear bench seats so that can better have a look behind them and have a good clean.

Replaced the light housing on the rear number plate light as noticed that the bottom plastic bracket was broken. Image below shows the replacement and old housings.

Had to remove the LH rear inside light guard to gain access to the cabling and bolts that mount the rear number plate light housing. This took a while as needed to purchase a 400mm long screw driver as well as letting WD40 penetration fluid deal with a seized screw.

Keen to replace the outside black mount block too but that will require breaking the light connections inside. Need to give this more thought as it's not clear to me how to deal with these sorts of fittings yet.

Changed the barrel lock on the fuel filler cap - see article.

Ordered some spare light bulbs so that have a complete set of spares. See full image list here.

Have confirmed that the steering lock does indeed work. This seems to be working better since the steering wheel was centred in the full service last week.

Looking at the battery box there are slots above the vents to allow a battery clamp to be mounted. The image below is from another 300Tdi Defender.

Will order a battery clamp, J bolts and some nuts and bolts so that can clamp our battery into place.

Noticed in the other Defender that the Immobilsation Spider box is tidy and no loose connectors.

Compare this to our Land Rover spider below. Suspect in our Land Rover that there has been some sort of by pass although the engine immbolisation does work.

Removed both rear load area side trims. This involved removing the second row outer seat belts too. This has now allowed further removal of the aerial cables which have now been traced back to the head lining. Quite pleased also that the inside body work is in really excellent condition. Will clean and dust off before refitting.

Next step is to remove all the rear headlining sections so that access to the underside of the roof can be gained. Need to order a trim plug removal tool to help.
