First home inspection

Here is the first dump of numerous things that need to be addressed, fixed, understood, etc... Some will need to be dealt with straight away. Others will take time and some, will of course, never be resolved. The list will no doubt grow. Aim being to keep all the fixes under the home financial radar.
  • Stone chip on the wind screen - may be small enough for "an in place" fix.
  • Driver's side front side light not working.
  • Driver's side rear side light not working.
  • Driver's side small side wing indicator not working - the one on the front does work.
  • Rear number plate light unit has a broken seal.
  • Radio power comes on but nothing displayed on the LCD screen.
  • Radio aerial snapped.
  • Steering lock does not seem to engage.
  • Full service.
  • Steam clean engine bay.
  • Under chassis prevention treatment.
  • Floor mats for second row of seats.
  • Rear door lock does not work from the outside - only from the inside.
There is one key for the filler cap, one for the doors and one for the ignition with missing immobiliser unit. The second ignition key is twisted. There is also an immobiliser fob.
  • Need to either get some more keys cut and/or change some locks.
  • Need to understand the immobiliser and alarm situation. Neither seem functional at the moment.

Looks like there is an internal intruder alarm sensor.

Decided that need to get some physical security on the vehicle. Will be going for the following:
  • Pedal lock kit - Prevents physical access to any of the three pedals.
  • Steering lock - Cannot be turned.
  • Gear locks - Keeps the vehicle in low ratio, diff locked and main gear engaged. Cannot be towed.
  • Locking wheel nuts.
Lots going on in the battery compartment under the front passenger seat.

  • Condition of the battery.
  • Bundles of cables/amplifiers/etc... not going really anyway need to be removed.
  • Large threaded bolt going through to underside - need to understand this some more.
  • Numerous cut outs which could do with being plugged with grommets.
Passenger side front foot well not looking too bad.

  • The bulk head covering needs a tidy and positioning better.
Inside the fuse box is not looking too molested.

  • Would like to understand if all is standard and whether any modifications have been made.
The outside of the fuse box has two holes bottom left.

  • Would like to understand what they are for and if original.
Front dash fits well and does not rattle.

  • Numerous screw holes though for various gadgets used in the past.
The underside of the middle front passenger seat.

  • EGR not connected but clearly is in the engine bay. Want to remove the EGR completely.
Underneath the seat there are numerous cables too.

  • Not clear where the cables go and if the other ends are connected.
The rear load space is fairly tidy.

  • Would like to understand the two clips on the seat support tray. They do not look standard.
The roof lining over the rear load space

  • Would be good to address the sagging
The near side panel by the rear door has a hole near the lock latch housing.

  • Original hole? Would be good to plug in any case.
In the middle row foot area, behind the front near side passenger seat.

  • Would like to understand the tubed hole. More cable routing?
The rear of the front seats.

Both seats have cables routed into the back of them with dangling plugs outside.

  • Would like to understand what the cables are for.

The engine bay is really quite tidy.

  • However the bonnet lining is in need of attention.
The rear driver's side looking in good condition.

  • Couple of cable ties bolted to the body work.
On the steering column.

  • Would like to understand this hole. Possibly for the choke on the petrol version?

The classic Defender grill.

  • The bonnet not quite sitting level when closed.
  • Small drill hole drivers side on the front face of the bonnet.
The tool kit looks new and not used. However, some bits perhaps missing.
  • Owners manual suggest that there ought to be wheel chocks supplied as well as wading plugs
All the passenger side steps are looking pretty much free of any corrosion.
  • Both rear side passenger steps are seized and will not deploy.
